Highlands Ranch was among the territory passed from France to the United States in the Louisiana Purchase. The first documented exploration of Highlands Ranch was undertaken by Stephen Harriman Long in 1820. It was later, in 1859, that the entire Denver area began to see growth in ranch settlements with the primary use being for cattle raising.
The Twentieth Century saw a huge spike in population growth following the Colorado Gold Rush. While Highlands Ranch remained mostly farm and ranch land during the time, Denver and Littleton saw a rapid rise in commerce and residents.
